Attractions and Excursions in Taba, Egypt |
The desert: ferociously blazing, deeply silent, apparently empty. Majestic and imposing in its simplicity. The sea: crystalline, with its million hues of blue, its fertile, healthy marine life, unpolluted, a triumph of nature. A holiday in the area isn’t complete without a visit to the desert, whether to a natural location; to one of the unexpected, hidden historical sites scattered throughout this crossroad of civilisations that has been for centuries the Red Sea, or to the natural marvels of the sea itself. In Taba, many excursions can be done to some outstanding sights. Here is a selection of the most interesting places in the area. |

The Taba area, at the very crossroads of human history, is a place rich in historical sites and natural beauty. Your hotel will be able to organise for you guided or non-guided visits to some of these sights. Here is a selection of interesting excursions from Taba. | Pharaoh’s Island | The Crusaders, the Ottomans, Napoleon and many others have used and defended the imposing 12th century fortress of Pharaoh’s Island. Excursions by boat to the island are organised and sold by hotels and local aqua centres, on a half day or full day basis. Lunch is often served on board. The excursion also includes snorkelling in the azure waters surrounding the island. | Monastery of St. Katherine and Mount Moses | The excursion to this historical site is a definitive must in Sinai. It is a very interesting full day excursion. Sometimes the tour includes also the climbing to the top of Mount Moses. In this case, the excursion starts in the middle of the night, to be able to reach the top of the mountain by sunrise. The climbing to Mount Moses is relatively easy, as it is done via a quite smooth path, but you need to be reasonably fit to enrol in it, as it takes about two hours to reach the top. Once on top, the view of the sun rising among the mountains is stunning. | Coloured Canyon | One of the most astonishing landscapes in Sinai, this narrow desert canyon is a sight to remember. Excursions are available on a half-day basis, by jeep. Often the tour includes a stop at some Bedouin outlet, with the opportunity of seeing some beautiful handicrafts and of tasting the excellent Bedouin tea. Other excursions are also possible, just ask your hotel’s guest relation desk. They will be able to direct you or hire a car or a cab for you. |
